Dr. Steele and Sandy go to Roatan!

From November 15-30, the intrepid Dr. Steele (or "La Machina" to her World Vets co-volunteers) teams up with Sandy again for some spay/neuter fun on the island of Roatan, Honduras. The goal: to "fix" as many pets as they can over several days of clinics, and then relax a bit with some SCUBA. Follow along on their adventures!

A Day of Adventures!

Sandy at the turn around point of our morning walk.
November 16, 2014  Sunday
Last night Sandy and I spent part of the evening on the third floor balcony, in the hammocks, looking at the stars and listening to the night bugs.  It was fantastic and relaxing and wonderful.
This am we had a light breakfast then went for a walk along the shore line.  It had poured rain throughout the night and everything was soaked, but not another drop of rain throughout the day.  The temperature was very nice all day.

There's the team... ready to ZipLine!

We finally got picked up for our zipline trip.  Definitely “island time” here!  We were taken up to the hills to the Monkey Trail Canopy for the zipline down all the way to the beach!  There were 12 zip stations of varying length and speed.  What a rush!

WooHoo!  Here comes Sandy!

Stacy as Super Woman!

Our trusty team:  Wilson and Omar were great.  The other two guys kept us safe!

Then we had a tour through the Gumbalimba Park to see local species of flora and fauna.

We got to see iguanas, agouti, macaws and capuchi monkeys!  We had a great time!

Our guide was giving us instruction before going into Monkey Town.  This little guy watched and waited, then jumped onto Sandy's shoulder for a ride to town!

I am not wearing my glasses because of "monkey see, monkey do".  If you wear glasses, then monkeys want to try it.  They will take your glasses and run off with them and try to wear them.  If they won't stay on, which is common, they often break them in frustration.  Now, that is frustrating!

Sandy with another friend.

These monkeys are all loose.  They do have an enclosure to retreat to at night, but if they don't want to go in, they stay out all night.  Can't force them to do anything!

These little agouti are running around all over.  The locals call them "rabbits".

These beautiful macaws fly free in the preserve.  They mate for life, so you always see the pair.  If one of them dies, the other stays single for the rest of its life.

Then we went along the beach to a nice beach restaurant, The Beachers.   Had coconut shrimp and salad.  They are known for their shrimp here in Roatan.  Very tastey!

Mike, Stacy, the owner of Beacher's and Sandy.

Took a water taxi back to the West Bay area.  Joined some others for another snack, had the most amazing key lime pie, and finally back to the house.
Early day tomorrow to swim with the dolphins!
Hasta manana!

  1. oh, the zip line trip sounds wonderful....I want to try that someday. Those closeups of the monkey are darling, such great eyes. Were there beads on the one Iguana? You all look like you're having great fun. Stay safe my friend.
